Disinformation and Xenophobia in Middle East Media

The International Media Council of the Next Century Foundation is convinced that the honesty or dishonesty of media affects the mental health of the world. Freedom of expression is vital as a means of permitting all views to flourish peacefully. It is a cliché that the price of this freedom must be continual vigilance – in particular vigilance to identify and expose the encouragement of malice, war and the incident of hate speech and image.

Saudi wants Dutch MP apology

Saudi Arabia has asked the Dutch government to intervene over remarks by an anti-immigration politician who said Muslims should ‘tear out half the Koran’ and wants him to apologise, a Saudi newspaper said on Sunday.

Geert Wilders said in an interview published last week that Muslims should dump half their holy book if they wanted to stay in the Netherlands and that he would chase Islam’s Prophet Mohammad out of the country if he was alive today.

Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia

In a strong show of solidarity, US President Bush and Turkish Premier Erdogan held a two hour meeting yesterday. Bush gave his support for Turkey's entry into the EU and praised Turkey for her help in the war on terror. However, after the meeting Erdogan was critical of US rhetoric in the war on terror - he said referring to Islamo-facists was offensive to many muslims and "In the same way we consider anti-semitism as a crime against humanity, Islamo-phobia is also a crime against humanity."
