The BBC caused some controversy again when they decided to censor the word 'Palestine' from a performance by rapper Mic Righteous on BBC Radio 1xtra.
Samira Shackle explained in her article 'BBC defends decision to censor the word "Palestine"'- 2nd February 2012 that the BBC's guidlelines "make allowances for 'individual expression'", yet censored this word as they believed that it "would have compromised impartiality".
Shackle states that "nine complaints said that their main point had been ignored" by the BBC, arguing that the Occupation of Palestine is not an opinion that is being made, but rather a fact that should be addressed.
The BBC are defending their decision to censor the word "Palestine" with the sound of shattering glass, believing that the producers were not expecting a political statement to be made. This has caused Public annoyance as it is arguable that the BBC were potentially being bias and could choose other words or statements to censor which could actually have a significantly more negative effect.
